My Personal Journey of Asian Pop Music Discovery Part 2
Yeah, the series you probably completely forgot about continues. Well, since it's only part 2, I wonder if it really counts as a series yet... It took me a little bit of time to even find part 1, since I wrote it even longer ago than I thought I did. I will continue linking you to youtube vids of the songs I like. Fun games for this vids: A) Count the number of outfits per performer. B) Check the video statistics using the square button next to the number of views. B, sadly, does not really work for every video.
First off for this post, the "Pop" part of the name is slightly misleading, since I will also discuss music from any other genre, but most of it will probably still be popular. The only restriction that still counts is the "Asian" part. So let's get some rock up in here. Yes, for those of you who may have guessed how I found this song, I still learn about some of my favorite music from anime. It's where I found Matsushita Yuuya. I've listened to some of his other songs too, and look at me, enjoying R&B.
As I've already mentioned in previous posts, I got into the techno-pop group Perfume over the summer, and because I liked their songs so much, I listened to some music by the other groups produced by Nakata Yasutaka, capsule and Meg. Of the ones I've heard, Droplets is probably my favorite from Meg.
Aside from anime and building off of stuff I already know and like, I've been using the Oricon charts as a resource. (The latest weekly single ranking for reference) If you have a basic knowledge of Japanese, you can most likely navigate enough of the site to look at music rankings if you want. AND some awesome people on youtube actually post up videos of the weekly, monthly, and yearly single rankings with short clips of the songs and pvs. If you want to search for weekly, search "Oricon top 30", monthly "Oricon [insert month of choice]" (typically top 50), and someone put up a top 100 vid for 2010.
A sampling of Songs/Artists I've discovered and liked from this method:
Stereopony - Chiisana Mahou
Sid - Rain
Yui - Rain I found it amusing that these two were next to each other in the yearly ranking
Koda Kumi Two links, 'cause she is that sexy.
Kamiya Hiroshi - For Myself I want him as a house husband. Alternatively, as a maid. Alternatively alternatively, as a butler.
And for something a little different, Hikawa Kiyoshi- Nijiiro no Baiyon
This is also a good way to learn about Korean artists, since they sometimes release Japanese versions of their songs. Japanese version of the catchiest song ever and Kara.
And in Johnny's discovery (why not?) somehow the group aside from Arashi I find myself most interested in atm is NYC. They're just too adorable. Exhibit A Exhibit B I will not apologize for this. And for
write_way_42, if she's even reading this (which she very well might not be), have Hey! Say! Jump!'s latest single. Enjoy watching Morimoto Ryuutarou and his 9 groupmates dancing around in a spaceship while thanking people in different languages.
So, did you like anything I linked? Do you hate my taste in music? Is there anything which you'd like to recommend to me? I know this post was pretty Japan-centric, but you can help me if you know other Asian groups you think I'd like. You can answer these questions and more if you comment!
