Looking up the names of Japanese cities has taught me so very many useful things. For one thing, some city names make perfect sense and mean interesting things like quiet hill or eastern capital, while others I simply cannot decipher. Probably doesn't help when cities like Sakai have a name that isn't even a common use kanji...

Other things of note:
The official name for the city of Saitama is written in hiragana.
Control Gifu and you control Japan.
American military personnel were advised to stay away from Hachiouji for decades after WWII.

What's the deal with Hachiouji and American military personnel? Is it haunted? Is it filled with lava?

According to Wikipedia, during WWII, captured airmen were beheaded there, so American airmen would bomb the heck out of Hachiouji, causing lingering resentment against American military for years.
