Every season I think of making a post about which J-dramas I'm watching, and most seasons I never get around to it. ^^; We're at about the half-way point now, so it's been long enough to get a pretty good feel for everything I've been watching (and also about the time I usually start to get behind on some dramas and give up on some of the.) I'll go over the dramas I'm watching this season, including one I've already dropped and one I'm thinking about dropping. There are a couple others from this season I've been thinking about checking out, but I won't include those.

Fukuie Keibuho no Aisatsu: I dropped this after two episodes. They're wasn't anything particularly bad about it, but it just never drew me in that much.

Shitsuren Chocolatier: Ugh... To organize my reactions by episode, ep. 1-2: Everyone is being so dumb, it's like they took a bunch bad ideas about love and made a drama about it, but the music and the visuals are really nice; ep 3-4: Well, this isn't too bad, the female characters are all pretty interesting and fairly well written, but everyone's still being dumb; 5: I want less of Souta in this drama (and he's the main character!), this is pretty irritating to watch, most of the male characters are unlikable for me.

So yeah, I don't really like it. I kind of want all the characters to end the series single (but with better attitudes about romance, if that makes sense). Of course, I can only think of about 4 romance dramas I've seen and enjoyed much. It's not like I don't like romance. I've read and enjoyed shoujo manga, I've read tons of BL and slash fanfic, but mainstream romance stories... They're pretty much either enjoyable or unbearable with no in between. -_- So I don't know if I'll bother watching more of this, especially since I can't envision an ending I'd be happy with with this kind of drama.

SHARK: This is probably one of the dramas I'm enjoying the most and look forward to the most each week. Mizuki's so adorable! Probably around the 3rd episode I concluded that he's a huge tsundere, and he just keeps being that way, saying cold stuff to all the members of SHARK even though he actually likes them a lot and thinks they're all promising musicians. ♥ Huh, now that I think about it, of the dramas I'm watching this season, this is probably also the one with the most slash potential...

I've liked how they spent an episode on each of the other band members, on the issues they've been going through and Mizuki winning them over. ♥ It's also cute how he reminds them of Kazuki. The latest episode was extra cute though, and was a big reason in why I wanted to finally make this post about the dramas I'm watching. ^^ I totally loved the part where Mizuki goes to talk to Kai after his friend from the diner pretty much tells him he needs to tell Kai that he wants him to stay or else he really will leave, and he goes to the store Kai's working at and he's awkwardly practicing what to say to Kai and it's stuff like: Your guitar is 60 points out of a hundred. But Ichika has come to confront Kai at the same time, and Mizuki overhears her telling Kai to either accept Mizuki or leave SHARK and just bursts out telling her she's dumb for asking Kai to leave and praising Kai. ♥ That one scene just showed Mizuki's personality so well, how he's awkward when he's trying, but when he lets it all go under pressure, he ends up doing and saying the right things and really touching all of the SHARK members.

Isharyou Bengoshi: More or less a legal drama focusing on divorce cases. ^^ Since most of the episodes are about women seeking divorces from their husbands, I've enjoyed a lot of it as women taking the initiative to get out of pretty unsatisfactory relationships (and on favorable terms for them). There are a lot of pretty interesting characters in this drama, especially Hakamada, the lawyer protagonist, although I feel like the leading actress who ends up as sort of his assistant doesn't give that great of a performance.

One of my favorite moments in the drama comes in the first episode, when a cheating husband is talking to Hakamada, being all, "you're a man, so you understand why I cheated right?" and Hakamada says straight up, "No, I don't understand." YES. Yes, take your "This is what men do" bs excuses and shove it.

Nezumi, Edo wo Hashiru: Period dramas are fun, but it being a period drama also means that there sure is a lot of death and slavery and general dark themes. Of course, I also enjoy police dramas which cover similar topics... It feels like it gets better and better each episode, but part of that is probably getting to know the characters better. And lol, Fumito guested playing a character named Fumisuke. After a recent episode, I realized that Hironoshin is totally my kind of man: he's a little awkward, pretty, and falls for a woman who kicks his ass regularly. ♥

Senryokugai Sousakan: This is a really silly drama most of the time, and I like that silliness, but I also like that it knows when to be serious. But I've also noticed that there are some actors I always see acting in police/mystery dramas playing police officers. ^^;

Kinkyuu Torishirabeshitsu: Amami Yuki's so cool! I liked how in the first few episodes there was kind of a mystery of what her private life was like as they slowly revealed it episode by episode.

Watashi no Kiraina Tantei: I only started watching it recently, but I enjoyed it so much that I watched the first 3 episodes all in one day! I really love mystery dramas and mystery stories in general, so dramas like this that poke fun at the mystery genre and get all meta are really fun for me. I especially love how reluctant Ukai is, how he's so ready to turn down murder investigations until Akemi offers him a bunch of money, and the fact that he specializes in investigating cheating spouses and looking for lost pets. xD And it's so priceless in every episode when the murderer is ready to go into a big speech about why they did it and everything, and Ukai's just like: Sorry, I follow the school of not listening to the murderer's talk. ^^

One other interesting thing about this drama is that there's surprisingly been two queer characters in it so far(!?) In the J-dramas I've watched so far, it's pretty rare for there to be even one clearly queer character (not hints or subtext, but characters who're clearly stated to be gay or lesbian or whatever). It's not like they're particularly progressive portrayals, since both those characters have died tragically (this IS a mystery drama, after all), but it still stands out.

So in short, SHARK is great, romance dramas are a crap-shoot, I like legal dramas and period dramas, and I watch a lot of mystery/police dramas.
